Many functional medicine clinicians are medical doctors (MD) or osteopathic physicians (DO) who completed medical school, residency, and board certification, then pursued additional training in functional medicine (e.g., IFMCP). Functional medicine is a practice approach, not a standalone degree – so you’ll also see nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), and occasionally chiropractic (DC) or naturopathic (ND/NMD) clinicians using this model. Titles, training paths, and prescribing authority vary by license and state law.
“Functional medicine doctor” often refers to a physician (MD/DO) who practices a root-cause, whole-person model. But functional medicine is used by multiple licensed professions. Regardless of title, the essentials are the same: a deep intake, evidence-based labs (with advanced testing only when it will change care), and a personalized plan across nutrition, sleep, movement, stress, and – when appropriate – medications or supplements. Safety comes from good training, a valid license, and measured clinical judgment.
Use this quick checklist when reviewing a bio or booking a consult:
Not always – many NPs and PAs provide excellent functional medicine care within their scope. For complex, multi-system cases or when you anticipate medication changes, a physician-led team can be helpful. The key is a clinician who is licensed, well-trained, and experienced with your concerns.
Your plan should be tailored to your medical history and medications. If supplements are used, your clinician should review interactions, allergies, and contraindications, and start low when appropriate. Seek urgent care immediately for chest pain, shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, or stroke-like symptoms.
